I am out running. I am in good shape and can run far, so I decide to run past the outdoor track-and-field center, just to see who happens to be there. I look down over the field and see that a soccer practice is going on. I see an old friend coaching a team of young kids. I knew he would be there, so I decide to stop by. As I begin to walk down the slight slope I see another old friend, K. His father has just passed away and it is a difficult time for him. I give him a hug, and walk with him for a bit. When I reach the field I walk into a house where I see A.G. and a co-worker. They are dressed quite well, in fashionable sports wear and it makes me feel a bit sloppy. They obviously have gotten to know each other quite well because as I enter they become quiet and I realize they must not like me being here. I am annoyed and feel like the third wheel. I wanted to come here to talk to my old friend but now I can't do that with these here. I sit down with them and we exchange pleasantries, and then a long pause occurs. A very uncomfortable pause. A kind of pause that girls ignite to freeze out another girl. I look at them, and then I notice that my co-worker has a limo with her! She owns a smaller limo, an older one, and when I look inside I see that she has a bed in there, right next to the driver's seat! She has decorated it in i Laura Ashley sheets and everything is perfectly organized! Someone wonders why she did it. She explains that is has to do with the registration of this car, and that for tax purposes it was easier to do it this way. I don't know whether to think this is crazy or adorable.

I walk around the room, A.G. and my co-worker are still chatting. I am getting ready for something. I dig around in my pockets and find keys, old keys that I didn't remember were there. I walk around, not sure of what to do first, so I end up walking from spot to spot, and then back -- which makes me look even more insecure and unrelaxed. I look at their outfits and shoes again. For some reason I am not that impressed by my co-worker's choice of shoes, they look old. I think they give me hints that I will not be able to the friend I came here to see...

A girl stands alone on a very oversized balcony. She is high up in a large old, and sturdy building, and it is twilight. A very city-like scenery, somewhat like 'Bladerunner'. She is standing on a low ledge overlooking the street below and the next building on the other side. I know she will not jump, she just wants to see it all, take it in.

A man stands alone on a balcony. He is high up in a large building, and it is twilight. A similar scenery. The balcony is oversized and made in grey and sand tones, all in concrete or sandstone. It will take hundreds if not thousands of years for this structure to wither. He looks out over the street, and then, sitting down on the ledge with his feet dangling, he suddenly turns around so he lies on his back with his head viewing the scene upsidedown! His feet are touching the balcony floor and he is now arched across the wide and low ledge. Backwards. Then he stands up and walks to the elevator.

The girl walks to the elevator.

They meet.

I can't get over how obsessed some people are over Gmail! Someone has set up a Gmail swap website, just so you can secure that cool email address you always wanted.
Oh, I did get mine a while back...

Also...

Eva Biaudet has a weblog. Who is she? Eva Biaudet is a member of the Swedish People's Party but writes her blog in English. It will give you an insight into Finnish politics of today, and it should be very interesting to follow.

Kieran of Crooked Timber brings up an interesting topic - plagiarism.

With younger students it's easier to spot. The kids "copy and paste" information onto word documents and think that it's sufficient and acceptable work. Younger students need a lot of practice in order to learn how to avoid plagiarism, but it needs to be installed very early on. Many 6th graders are nowadays required to write up to ten page long research reports (something I did not have to do before I entered upper high school) and, needless to say, the issue of borrowing facts and information will come up.

Purdue University Online Writing Lab has information and advice that is easy to understand for young people.

Northwestern also includes examples that are considered appropriate.

But ultimately this could be of good use to teachers/students of any level:
Plagiarism.org and Turnitin. I haven't tried it out yet, but will next time I have a large stack of reports to grade.

My Cat Hates You

I let the little kitten run around on my parents' lawn. It is so small, and its red fur shows like a bright furry ball against the dark and shadowy grass. It is of course twilight. I look away for a momement and the kitten is gone. In the valley below I see a larger cat. It looks unkind. It walks up toward the lawn and now I see the little kitten again... but the bigger cat is walking toward it and I know it is going to try to intimidate or even hurt the little one. It doesn't get a chance, because I am there to chase the big evil cat away.
